The Venus was a definate symbol of Fertility. I believe that the culture believed whoever displayed a "Venus" would have a fruitful life with many, many children. Without Venus, their lives would be barren.
I believe obese women were the only women with social standing and riches adequate to allow them to become obese. They were of a high social standing and that is why they are immortalised in stauettes. Obesity was a symbol of wealth

It seems that ancient peoples in Europe favored (bred for) blond hair, blue eyes, grey hair in 'wise persons' and perhaps for females to gain weight. We flush (overfeed) a cow before we breed her because it greatly increases the percent of conception. So perhaps they noticed that women who could gain weight were the ones that had more offspring. Very thin women sometimes shut down the reproductive processes.
Maybe men thought a fat woman was a sign of success or maybe they loved fat women. There ARE some men who find fat women desirable.

Perhaps Early Man found the figure lush, robust and exciting, and therefore immortalized that figure in stone. It is not surprising that many of these figures were found. Only recently has the anemic and emaciated form, barely recognizable as female, been considered the ideal.
My theory is that during those times, obese women were desired and regarded as beautiful, seen as voluptuous and all-encompassing. A skinny woman was seen as unattractive, perceived as cold and uncaring.

You know, if you look at a lot of the dolls produced over the last century, and pretended they were real depictions of children, you would have to assume that either most of the children of the last century were obese (and sufferred from birth defects), or that the peoples of the advanced economies worshipped fat children.
Maybe the "Venuses' are just dolls? or, maybe they are stylised stamps, like the chops of China, or even demonstration models of the weaving patterns so many of them wear.

In the past, obesity, especially in women was something of great beauty and extravagence. Only a few decades ago, advertisements were made to fatten women up...It is just in the last few years that chubbyness was no longer beautiful. Media today subject healthy individuals into making them think that having meat on their body is bad and shameful, that the only way that they can be seen as beautiful is if they are skinny and have no meat on their bones. I say this beacause I was a chubby girl growing up, and now, I weigh 54kg for a height of184cm...it is not a pretty sight, I tell you...IF I could go back to being chubby, I would rather that figure than the figure I have now.
I think picture is just being honest there are more obese people in the world, and through out history we just dont see them being displayed in the media. I think it is honest picture, and all women dont have tobe toothpicks to be considered a woman.

This is very odd to have stumbled upon this site this evening. Just last night I was reading a National Geographic magazine, and became fixated upon a photograph of a statue - much like the one above.
What struck me was this: These statues, many of which are thousands of years old, must have had models. In a time when diet was as basic and natural as history has even seen, and humans lived a life of labor, doesn't this go a long way to prove that it's often NOT lifestyle that contributes to obesity??

The figure was a representation of "Child Birth". Which is why there is no hands or feet, but a high emphasis is placed on the body. Most females gain weight (some more than others) after child birth, thus the artist placed high emphasis on child bearing areas, the stomach, breast and hip areas! To prove this theory, later artist depict kings as LARGER images. For example, a king would be 2 sizes larger than people of his kingdom, 3 size larger than his army and 4 sizes larger than the average person of his country. There also would be a picture of the God or Goddess that gave him protection.

The statue is made at the time when people did not consume sugar, candies, chocolate, ice cream, white cereals like Manitoba, they did not have lunches or regular time-table in their daily program or sit at cafeterias just taking and not moving enough. Of course, I can only theorize like everyone else, but, I believe the Venus is a sculpture of something that was unusual within the ancient society. There was far more physical activity in the course of a day for people during ancient times, therefore caloric intake was usefully consumed. Also, overindulgence in food was most likely not the norm. So food intake and caloric burn probably kept most people within a healthy or "thin" body weight. If obesity was the norm with ancient societies, archiologist, who've uncovered ancient cities and bodies would have brought that into the light along with their many other discoveries. So, someone who was morbidly obese, as depicted by the Venus status, was most likely not the norm, but seen as something odd or unique. The body shape could have represented anything from fertility to desirability.. or it simply could have been an unusual and interesting thing to have...like a lava lamp. My trinkets and household collectables don't necessarily represent anything more than collectable objects, (created by an artist) that I found unique or interesting at the time I saw them.
