Obesity - Gallstones - Ursodesoxycholic Acid

Gallstone Formation and Weight Reduction - - Miller K.

Ursodesoxycholic acid (Ursofalk ) is effective in prophylaxis of gallstone formation during weight reduction through diet (Ann Intern Med 1995; 122:899-905). Gallstone formation is a problem with rapid loss of weight (references 10-28%). In the surgery of morbid obesity a gallstone formation is even observed postoperatively up to 38% (Gastroenterology 1992; 103: 214-221). Numerous centers propagate even a simultaneous Cholecystectomy for prophylaxis (Am J Surg 1985; 149: 551-557). A simultaneous Cholecystectomy in morbid obese patients on the one hand, is through the entrance, on the other hand through the body abundance very difficult.

Ursodesoxycholsaeure (Ursofalk ) is indicated in case of cholestatic disease.

Ursodeoxycholic acid, 600 mg/d, is highly effective in preventing gallstone formation in patients having dietary-induced weight reduction. (Ann Intern Med 1995; 122:899-905).
