Both my wife and I are overweight, but recently we both visited the same doctor at the Cleveland Clinic and because she asked specifically about her weight and I only asked about fatigue, her bloodwork, which was identical to mine, was categorized under obesity and our insurance would not pay for hers. Using the standard of being 20% over our ideal body weights, we could both technically be considered obese, but insurance covered my blood tests and did not cover hers--even though the tests were identical, both of us have a weight problem but only she asked about hers to see if she could reduce her weight reduce her risk factors for many ailments in the future. So, I encourage everyone out there to not mention your weight to your doctor if you want your bill paid. Say you are tired and it will get paid. Say you have a weight problem and it won't. Despite its reputation, the Cleveland Clinic has been greatly tarnished in our eyes. We do not wish to reveal our identity, because my wife's employment depends on her keeping a working relationship with the Clinic. Nonetheless, we had to speak out and we strongly encourage people to be careful when addressing the doctors there on the issue of weight. Thank you.

I have a girlfriend in her early 50's. I care about here very deeply, and she has said that I have stareted to tansform her life. She vas varioud medical problems, including chronic lung congestion brought about by heavy smoking for most of her life (though has given up several years ago), and obesity. She is 5'1" tall and is a size 20 (United Kingdom). My name is Rhnea i am 37 years old and i live in Kentucky and i am over weight. I am 5'9" and the last time i weighed i was closing in on 300 pounds and i hate myself. My name is Ellie and I am from Canada. I consider my self to be obese. I have been up and down with my weight for about five years since I had my two kids. Right now I am at 199 and that is the heaviest I have ever been and I can feel it. Me and my boyfriend have gained at least 15 pounds each since we started to date a year and a half ago, but I always knew that it was up to me to lose the weight and knowing how to go about it the healthy way. I have made up my own program where I do 60minutes of excersise everyday and I have made a chart to keep track of what I eat and what I do for a work out, it is a life change and you are the only one who has the power to turn your life around, everyone has a choice, that is how I see life, food will always be there but if your unhealthy you may not be there for very long.
i am responding to the comment at the top here that 20% over "ideal body weight" is obese by insurers standards. so at 165 cm and wieghing 75 kilos (i am in new zealand) i am obese! i don't think so. i am a great weight. this is not socially accepted -how the company won't pay for that couple's treatment because of overweight - but no mention of things like anger management problems or lifestyle that are a greater risk factor- they just don't want to pay out, and know that people don't complain about discrimination against fat - because there is something immoral about being fat? what nonsense. if you are going to judge others do so on the things they do that hurt other people or the earth. the fat discrimination is terrible considering how badly so many people behave - but if they're skinny, it's okay. i don't buy it. to try and lose weight is a valiant struggle if it is for health and mobility - but these operations are dangerous and cause more pain to most people who get them, in the long term. better to resist the hype and work on self-love and keep active, and this will probably lead to more happiness! good luck.

Hi there fellow 'obesies'. Nice way to describe chronic overweight. That's really what has happened to me. As a child overweight, during puberty normal and from age 22 steadilly gaining weight. I tried every diet known and most diets were 'fun' or a challange to me. Ofcourse I lost a lot of weight due to diets. But I have always gained more than what I lost. Some of the best diets and/or treatments. . . . . in the early 80's I was given an amphetamine called tenuate dospan together with navidrex K, to get rid of fluids. This worked real well. At the end of the cure I was as slim and trim as I wished to be, but not for long. My last venture a gastric balloon. After the first few days of great discomfort the thing did its job and I lost weight. The gastric balloon is not free from embarrasement as it tends to produce a lot of hot air. . . I burped excessively and the burpes stank . . Anyway, the gastric balloon was removed in October last year after it had served its six months in my stomach. At that time I had lost 21kg. Now in May I have regained 13kg. Shame I thought that this time the weight would stay of. In my opinion I don't eat as much as I used to before the balloon but I am probably wrong. Now I am thinking of going for the 'pacemaker' makes a lot of sence and seems to be meant as a permanent aid. I really don't like surgery or having to stay overnight in a hospital, so this might be right for me. Finally something for to consider. . . . . . I lost more weight in my life so far than my actual weight, in other words I should weigh 0 kgs. . . . . .. Lots of luck and good health to you my fellow 'obesie', regards from Norbert .

Hi my name is Arvella and I have been hearing a lot of negitive things about the gastric bypass surgery. I heard of a few people that had it in my area and some were put on life support and got a server infection and almost died. I've thought about having the surgery myself but haven't really gave it a great deal of thought seeing as though I have a problem with doctors and surgery. Hi my name is Kim. 9 years ago I had the banding done and was not helped at all, I have not lost the weight I needed to, I have vomited almost daily for nine years. Not sure what to do or where to turn, does anyone have advice? I hit the scale at 225 cant seem to lose any weight no matter what I do. My name is Ronnie o Dec. 18th 2002 I, had gatric bypass surgery I felt extremely better after about the 3rd day. The feeling came from right after the surgery I, was more happy that I would be around longer. Therefore walking made me feel ten times better the healinng was much faster because I refused to lay down and want others to wait on me because I hjust had majorsurgery. Doing things for myself was painful but moving and making myself more mobile help my recovery.Before surgery I weighed 317 and 8wks. later and approximately 52pds. lighter. I'm able to attend water aerobics 4 times a week I do 33-45 minutes 5 times a week on the crossramp I feel great on my way to a healthier lifestyle.

Hi to all...I am a nurse and want to tell you a story about a 38 year old woman who underwent a bypass surgery,june 4 2003...this is a 38 year old woman with 100 pounds to lose,no health problems what so ever except for her weight..well this person had the surgery and is still in the hospital a month later,in the icu,she had a leak and went septic and shock,she has a trachostomy right now,because she is unable to come off the ventilator,she has dialysis for approximately 2 weeks,because her kidneys had shut down from being septic..she is doing better now,but will have to go to a rehab to get her off the ventilator and strong enough to go home to take care of her 2 children..our hospital does atleast 3 of these surgerys daily and i would say atleast 1-2 of these a week go badly. I also am about 100 pounds over weight and had wanted to go the easy route with this sugery..didnt anyone watch oprah when that man lost 305 pounds in one year,without surgery...come on people we can do this...if you take the time and really work hard,you can do this...get up start moving...thats all it takes,if you can psycologically not put the food in your mouth because you know with the surgery if you overeat you will get sick then what makes us not do that on our own...please think long and hard before you go this route,there are always the chances that you could have serious complications...

I started at 345 pounds and I now am weighing in @ 220 pds!! I am 6 months post op of having the Gastric Bypass surgery in CT. I have already lost 125 pounds and I am feeling GREAT! This was the most important and life changing thing I have ever done. I am happy that I chose to go with this and I have never felt better. I have rec'd such great support from my entire family, friends and co-workers. I have been able to refer two others to my doctor who performed this surgery which is Dr. Carlos Barba @ St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. Dr. Barba and his staff have been so support as well and I can't thank him enough for saving my life! I had SEVERE Sleep Apnea, borderline Hypertension/High blood pressure and borderline diabetic. I encourage those who are thinking about doing this, to make sure you have the support of your loved ones -- there will be times you will be very emotional and wonder why you put yourself thru it at all.. I had my bad days but if you follow the guidelines that are given to you by your dr. and dietician, you will succeed. Remember, this is not an easy way out for any of us, this is a way to help us physically and health wise. If I had known more about this surgery a few years ago, I would have done it then! My Primary Insurance paid for the entire operation. To those that I had the oppurtinity in meeting during this - I hope you all are doing good and hope to see you at the next support group meeting... take care!! when i was younger i got hassled at school for being very thin. So i thought that if i put on weight i would be treated like normal. I was wrong. Today my weight is 157kG. I have tried everything to lose weight but have had no luck. I now have class 2 diabetes, 2 triple bypasses and i am so big that my legs can hardly stand the weight of my body. I can stand for no longer than 15 minutes before my legs begin to ache and i collapse. The doctor told me that if i don't lose at least 55kg i will die. Please this is a warning to you all...stay healthy!

My name is Donna and I live in Liverpool in the UK. I have just happened upon this site and can relate to the feelings of all who are overweight. I had a gastric by passalmost 3 years ago when my weight had risen to 420ibs +. I say +because the scales did'nt go any further! I was terrifed when I had the op but knew it was my last chance for a 'normal' life. The operation went well and I also had my gall bladder removed. I was in hospital for 5 days and was determined to motivate from day one to speed up my recovery, which worked. At first I could only manage a teaspoon of sloppy food 3 times a day, this increases gradually and now my meals are the size a small child woud have. It is a life altering op in many ways. Although I have now lost 224lbs I still need to lose more but the weight loss is almost at a standstill and I am grateful for what I have lost. Food is not as important to me anymore but I do have to be careful what I eat so as not to vomit when it gets 'stuck'. GBP surgery is worth having but expect a lot of changes. Good luck! Hi, I'm Pauline and have struggled all my life with my weight. I am 5'4" and weigh 275, my BMI is 56. I suffer from osteoarthritis, osteopenna, fibromyalgia, plus my major joints are bone against bone as my cartlige has deterioriated. I have gone on many, many diets....I usually lose 10 lbs and then my body seems to hang on to the fat regardless if I starve myself or work out. I am willing to follow a special program of nutrition and test medication to help me lose this weight once and for all.
